International Committee

DAV has set up a separate body for the management of cross-border relations and affairs, namely the International Committee, which

  • coordinates the involvement of DAV members active in AAE and IAA,
  • acts as an interface to the DAV Board of Directors and advises it on the strategic development of international work,
  • identifies the issues and developments on which the DAV should take a proactive stance,
  • provides substantive feedback to the relevant DAV specialist committees or working groups, and
  • provides individualised information and development opportunities.

Currently, 70 members of the DAV are actively engaged in the committees of the AAE and IAA. Our diverse group consists of individuals of all ages and backgrounds, both men and women, bringing in a wide range of experiences.

Become part of this exciting initiative and help address the challenges of tomorrow by developing innovative, cross-border solutions!

If you have any questions or are interested in participating in international work, the Young Actuaries Initiative, or speaking engagements, please feel free to reach out to us.

Interview with Dr. Clemens Frey, Chairman International Committee

What prompted you to get involved in the DAV's international work?

That was a lengthy development. It certainly started with my involvement in the early development of Solvency II. Since the early 2000s, I have been involved in an AAE working group on this topic. This was followed by activities in General Insurance and Big Data at the IAA, followed by other committees. I am particularly pleased to have just been appointed to the Executive Committee of the IAA. Looking beyond our own borders, picking up impulses, exchanging ideas with interesting colleagues, helping to shape topics such as the international regulation of AI or sustainability - that is my motivation for international work.

What are the benefits for DAV members of participating in AAE or IAA?

I have already mentioned a few points above. Of course, networking in the international actuarial community can be very helpful. In addition, working at AAE or IAA (or in the IAA sections) is a professional and personal enrichment: You get impulses to reflect your own views and convictions on international perspectives. Of course, there are also creative opportunities and a gain in professional knowledge that should not be underestimated, which can also be relevant for your own professional advancement.

In your view, which topics are of particular importance for the DAV in the two umbrella organisations?

At AAE level, I believe that regular dialogue with EU institutions such as EIOPA is important, as is the further development of common training standards and the review of Solvency II. With regard to the IAA, the priority is to intensify contact with supranational organisations (e.g. the OECD or the International Association of Insurance Supervisors). And, of course, the topics of international accounting, sustainability and actuarial data science are of particular importance.

Why should DAV members get involved internationally?

On the one hand, out of self-interest, as already mentioned. On the other hand, to strengthen the effectiveness of the DAV as one of the largest actuarial organisations in the world. My experience is - despite sometimes differing opinions - that the views and assessments of the DAV are highly valued, both within the AAE and in the IAA. And last but not least, we can actively develop our profession.

Why should young, new DAV members also consider taking up an international voluntary position?

Particularly early on in your career, an international perspective helps you to question your own certainties, gain new insights and develop your skills. Don't be shy - virtualisation in particular has made international work easier to present. And on the part of the International Committee, we provide support in growing into international activities - don't worry, nobody is left alone.

What is the usual path - from personal interest to official office in AAE or IAA?

It often starts with involvement in a DAV working group or pool. As with these activities, the electronic DAV newsletter regularly publishes calls for applications to join the AAE and IAA committees - simply get in touch and we will be happy to clarify any questions and the next steps. Another very good option is to join one of the IAA's specialised groups (e.g. Life Section or ASTIN, see service page). You personally are a member of these groups and can become directly involved in international work. In any case, if you are interested, please contact the head of your working group or contact me directly, Dr. Frank Schiller as head of the AAE working group or Dr. Daniel Jung, who coordinates our international work from the DAV office.
