Organisation of Insurance and Financial Mathematics in Germany
Since insurance and financial mathematicians first came together in 1903 in a separate section of the German Association of Insurance Sciences (Deutscher Verein für Versicherungswissenschaften e.V.), the association has undergone numerous changes until it has found its current structure:
Since 1993, the Deutsche Aktuarvereinigung e.V. (DAV - German Association of Actuaries) has been the independent professional association of around 6,500 insurance and financial mathematicians and all those who work with quantitative methods in the insurance, financial and pension sectors in Germany. We ensure the professional expertise of our members and thus the intrinsic value of the title “Actuary DAV” with professional codes of conduct, high-quality training and continuing education requirements and programmes.
Since its foundation in 1980, the IVS - Institut der Versicherungsmathematischen Sachverständigen für Altersversorgung e.V. (Institute of Pension Actuaries) has pursued the goal of promoting the professional interests of its almost 900 members and advocating the public recognition of the profession. IVS experts have a wide range of specialised knowledge and are sought-after experts in all aspects of occupational and professional pension schemes due to their high level of professional qualification. Today, the IVS is a branch association of the DAV; our IVS members therefore also bear the title “Actuary DAV”.
Since 2002, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Versicherungs- und Finanzmathematik e.V. (DGVFM - German Society for Actuarial and Financial Mathematics) has been the specialist mathematical society for experts working in the fields of actuarial and financial mathematics and quantitative risk management in Germany. It was founded in 1948 with the aim of promoting actuarial mathematics and technology and seeking co-operation with universities and colleges. Today, the DGVFM pursues exclusively non-profit - scientific and professional - goals, such as supporting actuarial research or promoting young mathematicians. All members of the DAV are also members of the DGVFM; in addition, there are numerous university lecturers, young academics and also sponsoring companies who support the aims of the DGVFM both ideally and financially.
